Card Advisor Methodology

What Card Advisor Is

Card Advisor is a weekly analytics report for people who buy raw trading cards and submit them for professional grading.

It answers one question: does the economics of buying this card, grading it, and selling it actually work?

Card Advisor is produced by Golden Bear Cards LLC and is powered by Precision Card Analytics, the analytical framework behind the product.

The Problem Card Advisor Solves

The trading card market has extensive price data. Comp tools and sales databases can tell you what a card sold for.

They cannot tell you whether buying it is sound.

A raw card becomes a different asset after grading. The grade it receives determines what it is worth, and a top grade can be worth several times a near-miss. The decision therefore depends on three things price history does not address: how often this specific card has historically achieved each grade, what it costs to find out, and whether the economics still work at the outcomes below the best case.

Card Advisor exists to answer that. It is decision analysis, not price history.

How the Analysis Works

Each week, Card Advisor screens a universe of roughly 15,000 to 17,000 raw cards across baseball, basketball, football, and Pokémon. A small fraction clears the analytical bar and enters the report.

Every card that clears is evaluated on the same measures, applied identically each week.

The Five Analytical Measures

CA Value

CA Value is the probability-weighted value of a card after grading. It blends the PSA 10, PSA 9, and lower-grade outcomes according to how often that specific card's population has historically achieved each one.

CA Value is an estimate of value across all outcomes. It is not a price anyone pays.

CA Value ROI

CA Value ROI is the return on that basis, net of acquisition cost, grading cost, shipping, and selling fees.

Card Advisor leads with CA Value ROI rather than best-case return, because a return figure that assumes the top grade describes an outcome that most submissions do not achieve.

Risk Rating

Risk Rating measures the margin of safety in the grading assumption. It is calculated as the PSA 10 rate less the break-even gem rate.

A higher Risk Rating means more room between the gem rate observed in the population and the gem rate the card needs to be profitable. Negative values are normal and indicate a card whose historical gem rate falls below its break-even requirement.

Risk Rating is a margin of safety on the grading assumption. It is a separate measure from downside protection.

Downside Protection

Downside protection is the projected PSA 9 profit, in dollars. It answers what a buyer keeps if the card grades 9 rather than 10.

Investment Score and Investment Grade

Investment Score is a composite on a 0 to 100 scale. Investment Grade is the letter derived from it: A+ at 90, A at 80, B+ at 70, B at 60, B− at 50, C+ at 40.

A score is a number. A grade is a letter. They describe the same assessment at different resolutions.

The Four Recommendations

Every card in the report receives one of four recommended actions. The logic is applied in order.

Grade – PSA. The card's CA Value exceeds its raw price, and its projected PSA 9 outcome is at or above break-even. This second condition is the downside protection requirement, and Grade – PSA is the only recommendation that must pass it. No Investment Score threshold applies.

Grade – alternative grader. The card did not meet both Grade – PSA conditions, but scored at or above 50, and an alternative grading service is currently available for that category.

Stockpile. The card did not meet both Grade – PSA conditions and scored at or above 50, but no alternative grading path is currently economical. These are candidates to acquire and hold raw, pending improved grading costs or service availability. Stockpile is not a rejection.

Pass. Everything else. Most cards screened each week fall here.

Whether a card receives Stockpile or an alternative grader recommendation depends only on whether an alternative grader is currently available. The underlying analysis is the same.

The Shortlist

The Shortlist is the week's highest-ranked opportunities, drawn from the cards that clear the analytical bar. It is a short selection from a much larger qualifying set, not the whole report.

Golden Cardboard

Golden Cardboard identifies setups where the structural measures align simultaneously at the strongest levels the model produces. These are the most structurally durable opportunities in a given week. Golden Cardboard designation is applied by fixed criteria, the same every week.

What Card Advisor Does Not Do

These limits are stated explicitly because they define the scope of the analysis.

Card Advisor does not forecast future card prices. The analysis uses current market data. It does not project where values are heading.

Card Advisor does not set exit targets or sell signals. It analyzes the decision to acquire and grade. It does not tell anyone when to sell.

Card Advisor does not time the market. It does not identify entry points ahead of anticipated price movement, and it makes no claim to establish positions before the market moves.

Card Advisor does not assess the condition of any specific physical card. The analysis is built on population-level grade distributions. Whether the particular copy in front of a buyer is well centered, clean at the corners, and free of surface flaws is a separate and subjective judgment made solely by that buyer. That assessment materially affects the grade outcome of any individual submission, independent of what the population data projects.

Card Advisor does not analyze alternative grader economics. All profit and downside protection figures are calculated on PSA grades and PSA market prices. A card recommended for an alternative grader has not passed the PSA 9 profit test.

Card Advisor does not guarantee grading outcomes. Gem rates are derived from historical PSA population data. Because higher-condition copies tend to be submitted for grading earliest, gem rates may decline over time as population counts grow. Historical gem rates are the best available proxy for future results, not a guarantee.

Card Advisor is not investment advice. Golden Bear Cards LLC is not a licensed investment advisor, financial planner, or fiduciary. The report is educational market analysis. Card values are speculative and may decline.

Who Built It

Card Advisor was built by Tim Hoskins, founder of Golden Bear Cards, after 35 years in private banking and wealth management on the lending side, underwriting assets that lacked standardized valuation methods.

The trading card market has the same structural problem: substantial capital, growing institutional interest, and no accepted way to value a decision rather than report a price. Card Advisor applies credit discipline to that gap.
